Story of the Producers
  • The Foods of Athenry

As the saying goes, discovery is an accident meeting a prepared mind. In the early 2000s, life presented us with challenges—an uncertain future in agriculture and childhood health issues that sparked a lifelong passion for understanding the connection between food and well-being. Instead of resisting change, we embraced it.

With a commitment to creating food free from artificial additives, we sold our cows in 2004 and transformed the now-empty milking parlour into a bakery. And just like that, The Foods of Athenry was born.

Perhaps destiny played its part—nearly a century ago, my grandparents owned one of the largest bakeries in the West of Ireland. Baking is in my fingertips, and there’s magic in my hands.

The love of good food has always been at the heart of our family. While raising our own children, we believed in the simple truth that good food promotes good health. Every meal, snack, and treat we prepared was made with care, using wholesome ingredients.

When this passion evolved into Foods of Athenry, we carried that same philosophy into our business. Whether vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, or not, every product we create—crackers, cookies, cereals, and bars—follows our commitment to quality, taste, and nutrition.

The road hasn’t always been smooth. In June 2011, a fire destroyed everything we had built—an unexpected and devastating setback. Man makes plans, and God laughs, as the saying goes.

But we refused to let it end there. We picked ourselves up, started again, and came back stronger, wiser, and more grateful for the journey and the third chance we had been given.

Through hard work and unwavering attention to detail, our efforts have paid off. Recognised as one of the Top 10 Bakeries in Ireland by Hot Press in their 2015 Best of Ireland publication, their review perfectly sums up who we are and what we stand for.

"You might think a health conscious bakery somewhat oxymoronic, but that’s exactly what the Lawless family offer. A dairy farm turned bakery, they have a dedicated gluten free facility where they produce coeliac friendly treats and have won 38 awards for their produce over the last six years. Plus the setting is pretty darn picturesque"

With every bite, we continue to share our passion—baking with heart, integrity, and the belief that food should always be crafted with care. While the fire is a distant memory for many, we keep this time top of mind in the business, as a reminder of the importance of not
