Description

Achill Island Seaweed Salt is a mix of our pure white natural sea salt flakes (75%)  and Atlantic Wakame (Alaria esculenta) (25%) which is hand harvested by the Connemara Seaweed Company.

This unique fusion of sea salt and seaweed will give an exceptional umami flavour to any dish.  We love it sprinkled over roast potatoes or veg, over soups and salads or in baking, such as breads and savoury scones. It’s also great roasted with nuts and seeds for a little savoury snack.

About the Producer

Founded in 2013, Achill Island Sea Salt is a family business, which  was inspired by the long-forgotten tradition of salt production on Achill Island. In the time-honoured style, we began producing sea salt in our family kitchen. Due to ever growing demand we moved to a custom modified facility in Bunacurry, Achill Island in September 2016.  This move allowed us to increase production and transform from a local small business to a nationally recognised award winning brand.

Through a combination of sustainable traditional and modern techniques we create a great tasting, pure and natural Irish Sea Salt, which is organically hand harvested in small batches using a slow evaporation process.  The characteristics of Achill Island Sea Salt are directly linked to the high mineral content of the grade A wild Atlantic waters that surround Achill Island creating distinctive tasting and textured sea salt flakes

From humble beginnings in the family kitchen,  we have seen our sea salt garner worldwide favour  by professional chefs, home cooks and food lovers who appreciate the taste and quality of hand harvested sea salt and that extra dimension  it can bring to cooking.

Achill Island Sea Salt is hand harvested from the waters that surround Achill Island, off the west coast of Ireland using a combination of moderns and traditional techniques. The Grade A wild Atlantic sea water is harvested at the north of Achill Island and is then put through a series of filters to remove any sand, seaweed or particles that may be present in the water.

The sea water is then heated in a vacuum to allow for lower boiling temperatures. This leaves us with a concentrated salty brine solution. The brine is then pumped into a shallow crystallisation tank, where the sea salt crystals begin to form.

The salt crystals will begin to join together to create beautiful white flakes. Taking our time at this stage allows us to create soft and flaky sea salt.

We harvest these flakes by hand and place them on trays to be dried out. They are then ready to be packed by hand, ready for your table.
